Water Damage Insurance Claims: Loss Assessors on Your Side

A leak can do far more damage than the damp patch you can see. Insurance Claim Solutions records where the water has travelled and the damage room by room and handles your water damage claim with your insurer, so you are not left dealing with the loss adjuster on your own.

What your policy may cover

What Water Damage Insurance Usually Covers

Home insurance usually covers water damage caused by a sudden, accidental event, which insurers often call an escape of water: a burst pipe, a leaking tank or cylinder, or a washing machine or dishwasher that overflows. Damage to the building and to your belongings is normally included, and many policies also pay for somewhere else to stay if the house cannot be lived in while it dries out and is repaired. The exact cover, excess and limits depend on your policy wording, so we read yours against the damage before the claim goes in.

How a Loss Assessor Helps With a Water Damage Claim

A loss assessor is appointed by you, the policyholder, to prepare and present your claim. Insurance Claim Solutions is a public loss assessor regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland, and we handle water damage claims for homes and businesses. We record where the water has travelled, check how far the damp has spread and list the repairs needed. The insurer appoints a loss adjuster to assess the claim for it; you can appoint a loss assessor to act for you.

On a water claim we use photographs and a room-by-room schedule of damage to show the insurer what the leak has affected, from ceilings and floors to skirting, kitchen units and contents. We deal with the insurer and its loss adjuster on your behalf, look after the paperwork and keep you informed until the claim is settled.

Loss adjuster or loss assessor?

Who Does What in a Property Claim

When you make a water damage claim, your insurer sends a loss adjuster. They are appointed and paid by the insurance company, and they assess the claim on its behalf. A loss assessor does the same job from your side of the table: we are appointed by you, and we work for you.

Hidden water damage

Why Water Damage Often Goes Further Than You Can See

Water rarely stays where it lands. It runs along joists, soaks into plasterboard and insulation, and sits under floor coverings, so damage can turn up in rooms well away from the leak, sometimes weeks after it has been fixed.

Left in place, that trapped moisture can lead to mould, rot in timber floors and joists, and corrosion. We check behind and beneath the visible damage before the claim is put together, because these problems are much harder to add once a claim has been settled.

Points to check before making a claim

Why Water Damage Claims Can Run Into Difficulty

These are some of the points that can cause difficulty with a water damage claim. Reading your policy wording early helps you see where the gaps in cover may be.

Gradual damage exclusions: Gradual leaks and long-term damp are often excluded. Whether you are covered depends on the cause of the damage and your policy wording.

Poor documentation: Photographs taken before clean-up help show the extent of the loss. Once the water is stopped and it is safe, photograph the damage and keep damaged items for the insurer to see.

Delayed notification: Policies set out when and how a claim must be reported, so tell your insurer promptly. If you would like our help, you can call us straight away too.

Source not covered: Flooding, groundwater and drain overflow may be dealt with under a different part of your policy, and some properties have flood excluded, so check your policy wording.

With a loss assessor involved from the start, the damage is recorded before repairs begin and the claim is set out clearly against your policy wording.
